The Grumman F6F Hellcat was designed to replace the aging F4F Wildcat, the U.S. Navy's primary fighter at America's entrance into World War II. Details from combat engagements between the F4F and the Japanese A6M Zero were sent back to Grumman, who used the data to alter the F6F into an aircraft that was almost universally superior to the Zero.
